"What Doesn't Kill Us" is Housewright's 18th installment of the McKenzie series and it is a quite different narrative. McKenzie, former cop and now a do-gooder for friends in need, has been shot in the back in a questionable part of town and has been placed in an induced coma to allow healing. Police (Bobby Dunston, Jean Shipman, Special Agent Brian Wilson) and and former recipients of McKenzie "favors" (Chopper, Herzog, Shroeder, etc) all race to ascertain what McKenzie was working on and who would want him dead.I enjoyed the format less excitedly than many other reviewers as I found the POV format awkward as it switched back and forth between real time investigations and characters and post-coma remembrances and flashbacks of McKenzie. Housewright did a noteworthy job of arranging for a climax where all the hunters converged on the same spot while each having followed different clues and trails. Despite my nit-picking, one can seldom go wrong with a McKenzie novel.
